Server Migration (TUI => KEA) (Resolved) High

Affecting Server - Tui

  • 06/08/2024 13:35 - 31/08/2024 00:00
  • Last Updated 09/08/2024 12:09

Kia ora,

We are notifying you that we will be migrating your hosting services to a new web server. This is because the server 'Tui' is being decommissioned due to its end-of-cycle hardware, which is now being replaced with new hardware.

The migration process will be mostly seamless, though you may need to complete minor configuration updates - please see the details below.

The migration will be conducted in batches to ensure each website is functioning correctly before fully decommissioning Tui on 31/08/2024.

When do I need to make the changes? You will be emailed when you will need to update your name servers and email server (if you are using email services), keep an eye out on your inbox.

If you have a domain with us: We will update your name servers for you, so you won’t need to make changes to your name servers. If you use email services, you may need to update your email clients (such as outlook) to a new email server.

If you have a domain with another registrar: You will need to manually update your domain's name servers to the new host names provided below.

New Name Servers:

Name Server 1: autumn.rapidkiwi.net

Name Server 2: summer.rapidkiwi.net

If you use another provider for DNS: You will need to update the ANAME record, CNAME record and MX records (if using email).

Domain Root (ANAME): 114.23.117.108

www (CNAME): 114.23.117.108

MX: kea.rapidkiwi.net OR 114.23.117.108 OR mail.yourdomain.tld

Email Hosting:

If you use Rapid Kiwi for your emails, you may need to update your email clients (such as Outlook) with the new hostname if you were previously using 'tui.rapidkiwi.net' to connect. If you were using mail.yourdomain.tld then you won't need to update your email clients.

New Email Host: kea.rapidkiwi.net OR mail.yourdomain.tld

If you have any questions about the migration, please submit a ticket.

Regards,

Rapid Kiwi

Outage Report - Tui (Resolved) Critical

Affecting Server - Tui

  • 08/02/2024 03:07 - 08/02/2024 09:11
  • Last Updated 08/02/2024 10:33

Date of Incident: February 8, 2024

Server: TUI

Timeline of Events:

  • First Notified: 3:07 AM, GMT+13:00
  • Action Initiated: 8:05 AM, GMT+13:00
  • Services Restored: 9:11 AM, GMT+13:00
  • Backup System Reconfigured: 9:30 AM, GMT+13:00
  • Successful Backup Completion: 10:30 AM, GMT+13:00

Incident Description: Early in the morning on February 8, 2024, Rapid Kiwi faced a critical service disruption affecting Server TUI. The issue was first noticed at 3:07 AM when the automated backup system, scheduled to run at 2 AM, incorrectly targeted a drive partition that reached its maximum capacity. This error led to the mounted drive hitting 100% capacity, resulting in a cascade of service outages, including email, WHM + cPanel, and MySQL databases.

Immediate Response: Our engineering team sprang into action at 8:05 AM to troubleshoot and identify the core problem. We were able to gradually restore services, achieving full recovery by 9:11 AM.

Resolution and Preventive Measures: Following the restoration of services, the backup system underwent a critical reconfiguration at 9:30 AM. It is now set to target a mounted drive that is adequately sized to handle our backup needs without reaching full capacity. To ensure no data was lost during the outage, a complete backup of all accounts was initiated immediately after reconfiguration, successfully completing by 10:30 AM.

Rapid Kiwi sincerely apologizes to all affected by this morning's service disruption. We understand the critical importance of uninterrupted service and are committed to implementing additional safeguards to prevent a recurrence of today’s issue.

We are conducting a thorough review of our system configurations and backup procedures. This incident has highlighted the need for enhanced checks on system parameters and the implementation of more robust monitoring tools to detect and prevent capacity issues before they impact services.
